1889.01.01 Eclipse

As found in the December 21st 1888 Humboldt Daily Standard.

“There will be an eclipse of the sun on Jan. 1st next. It will be visible here and in all parts of the Pacific coast states and territories. Parties of astronomers from the eastern colleges will take observations at Winnemucca Peak, Nevada, and at Willows, this State, while a San Francisco party will look at it from Hopland. If we are favored with a clear sky the citizens of Eureka can smoke their glasses and look at it from their own houses. Do not take too many glasses or the eclipse may appear double.”
